LANGHORNE, PA – Needing a win to keep their postseason hopes alive, the Crimson Eagles came through in the clutch Wednesday afternoon.
Senior Brittany Sparling's lone goal midway through the first half was enough to push PBU past Lancaster Bible College in an NCCAA II East Region showdown that gives the Crimson Eagles their second single goal win over the Chargers this season.
Sophomore Sarah Schenkel fed Sparling off a beautiful cross from the left wing just 18:41 into the opening period to give the host squad the go ahead and - eventual - game winning goal.
Junior PBU keeper Kristen Lyszczasz had a monster game for the Crimson Eagles, registering 10 saves on the day including a somewhat miraculous stop with 15 second left in the game to help preserve the victory. Lyszczasz ended up in a one-on-one situation with a Charger forward but stuffed the visiting squad's final hopes on a sprawling save to in the waning seconds to record her fifth blanking of the season.
Lancaster actually held a slight advantage into total shots for the game15-14, but – despite putting 10 of those on goal – failed to find the back of the net in their ninth shutout loss of the season.
The Crimson Eagles improve to 7-11 overall for the season while the Chargers conclude their year with an 10-10 mark.
The win advances PBU into the NCAA II East Regional championship game to be played this Saturday. The Crimson Eagles will take on top-seeded Baptist Bible College, a team that has stolen the regional championship from PBU in the last three consecutive title bouts. The Defenders ran through the Crimson Eagles in their only meeting of the season just over two weeks ago in a 7-0 triumph.
