Box Score
La Plume, PA - With their playoff chances slowly evaporating with each passing game, it was no secret that the women's soccer team needed someone - anyone - to take a stand on the offensive end for a PBU squad that came into Saturday's contest with no goals to account for in their past two outings.
Step in Brittany Sparling.
The Crimson Eagle senior midfielder almost single handedly willed PBU to just their second CSAC win of the season against Keystone College Saturday afternoon. Sparling was the only player on either team to find the back of the net as the local product of Bedminster, PA connected for her fourth, fifth, and yes, sixth goals of the season in PBU's 3-0 shutout over the Giants.
As impressive as Sparling’s individual feat was, more importantly, the three goal triumph helps keep PBU’s slim CSAC postseason hopes intact. Although the Crimson Eagles will need some help from the rest of conference field down the home stretch, Saturday’s performance at the very minimum keeps it mathematically plausible for PBU to keep dreaming of a playoff berth.
Sparling broke Saturday's scoreless deadlock at the 31:00 minute mark dropping home what ended up being her first of three unassisted scores on the afternoon. PBU would take a 1-0 lead into the locker room, but Sparling proved to be far from finished, netting two additional scores in the final 25 minutes of play to help the visitors to their fifth overall win of the season.
Keystone allowed PBU to rocket off 14 shots – including an 8-0 advantage for the guests in the first half alone – in the Giants’ fifth defeat in six games. The Crimson Eagles improve to 5-10 overall for the season (2-5 CSAC) while Keystone slips to 2-10 (1-6 CSAC).
The team will return to the field next week during a CSAC bout with Neumann College on Tuesday. PBU will host the Knights at 4:00 pm.
