Langhorne, PA- Cairn hosted the Amcats of Anna Maria on Wednesday. The Amcats took the win with a final score of 21-8.
Cairn (0-2, 0-1 United East) gets the scoring started fast through freshman attackman
Brenden Adler (Dallas, TX / Homeschool) two minutes into the first quarter. Anna Maria (1-4)Â stepped up their game to get one back followed by a second to take the lead, five minutes into the quarter. Anna Maria got a slashing penalty to give Cairn the extra man for 30 seconds. Senior Attackman
Cole Heffler (Eldersburg, MD Central Maryland Christian) took full advantage of this opportunity and tied the game at two goals apiece. The rest of the quarter was a back and forth battle as the Amcats took the lead again only for Heffler to strike a second time as the score developed into a 3-3 tie-up. Cairn got another chance to convert a man up opportunity, but the Amcats turned the tides by scoring with one less man on the field, using that momentum to get two more before the quarter ended. Anna Maria held a 6-3 lead to close out the first.
The second quarter was all Amcats as they got five to extend their lead to 8 while holding the Highlanders to three shots by Adler, Heffler and Senior Midfielder
Adain Holliday (New York, NY Urban Assembly Maker Academy)
The third quarter started off with a strong offensive push by the Highlanders as Holliday found Heffler for a goal in the first 40 seconds. The Highlanders efforts did not last long though as the Amcats found the net for back to back goals within 30 seconds of each other. Freshman attackman
Ethan Smelcer (Perry Hall, MD / Concordia preparatory school) gave a line to the Highlanders with a goal off an assist by Heffler. Following that goal, the Highlanders had a man up opportunity after an illegal body check. Junior midfielder
Luke Fowler took that chance at full force, scoring back to back goals to make the score 13-7. The Amcats said enough and scored the next three to end the half with a 16-7 lead.Â
The first two minutes of the fourth quarter started off slow for both sides, until Anna Maria made an offensive push but Cairn's defense held strong for a while, till Anna Maria found a gap and converted the chance for their 17th goal of the match. Using that momentum they got the next four unanswered goals until
Cole Heffler had the final say off an assist from Smelcer, making the final score 21-8.
Heffler led the team in goals with 4, tied Smelcer for assists, each with two, while Smelcer and Adler recorded their first collegiate goals. Holliday controlled the possession game with 17 ground balls.Â
The Highlanders will travel to face the Dolphins of the University of Mount Saint Vincent on Monday the 9th at 5pm.
