LAX: Highlanders Drowned by Dolphins in High Scoring Contest

Riverdale, NY- The Highlanders traveled to New York City to face the Dolphins of Mt Saint Vincent. The Dolphins pulled away with the win in the high scoring contest, 25-10.

The first quarter started off exciting as Cairn (0-3, 0-1 United East) and University of Mount Saint Vincent (2-3) exchanged goals back and forth. The Dolphins struck first but senior attackman Cole Heffler (Eldersburg, MD / Central Maryland Christian) answered back off a pass from Freshman attackman Ethan Smelcer (Perry Hall, MD / Concordia preparatory school). It didn't take long for the Dolphins to respond again, taking the lead once more. Smelcer found Heffler for his second of the night to tie things up again within 20 seconds. Mt St Vincent took the momentum after that and ran away, scoring the next 6 goals unanswered until freshman attackman Brenden Adler (Dallas, TX / Homeschool) found the net to close the gap to end the quarter.

The second half started off hot for the Highlanders as freshman midfielder Michael Burnham (Binghamton, NY / Faith Mountain Christian Academy) found the net 3 minutes in to make the score 8-4. The Dolphins responded with a goal of their own a minute later, but junior midfielder Colin Welsh (Mount Laurel, NJ / King's Christian) closed the gap quickly again with a goal off a pass by Adler. Mt St Vincent took storm to score the next 6 goals unanswered to end the half with a 15-5 lead.

The Dolphins started the 3rd quarter with two quick goals in 2 minutes before a goalless span of 8 minutes before the Dolphins got their third goal of the quarter. Heffler responded quickly off an assist by Adler before Mt St Vincent extended their lead by two more. Heffler ended the quarter with a goal, the assist credited to Smelcer.

Junior midfielder Luke Fowler started off the scoring in the fourth quarter within a minute, off a pass from Adler. The Dolphins responded with back to back goals in under a minute. Cairn's defense held strong as four minutes went by before the Dolphins found the net again, then again a minute later. The Highlanders responded back with back to back goals from their Captains, Heffer and senior FO/midfielder Adain Holliday (New York, NY / Urban Assembly Maker Academy). Mt St Vincent got the final say, scoring with a minute left as the game ended 25-10.

Heffler led the Highlanders with 5 goals. Adler and Smelcer played the selfless game with 3 assists each. Burnham and Welsh took home their first collegiate goals. Holliday controlled the possession game with 7 ground balls.

The Highlanders remain on the road to face the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins in Gwynedd Valley, PA at 4pm this Wednesday the 11th.
