MVB: Highlanders Swept by Chargers in Conference Play

Lancaster, PA- The Highlanders took a road trip to face the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College on Thursday. The Chargers came out on top in a 3-0 sweep.

The first set started heavily in Lancaster's (7-8, 1-0 United East)  favor as they started with a 15-1 run. Cairn (4-16, 1-1 United East) found some footing as they pushed for the comeback with kills from freshman opposite Nehemiah Clark (Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea / Ukarumpa International School), junior outside hitter Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) and freshman opposite Justin Panaia (Jamison, PA / Dock Mennonite), splitting the next 14 points at 7 apiece to make the score 8-22. The Highlanders efforts fell short as the Chargers closed out the first set with the next three points, 8-25.

The second set started with the Chargers getting the first point, but Panaia struck back for the Highlanders on the next play to tie it up at 1-1. Lancaster found the upper hand to go on a 6-1 run before Clark and junior outside hitter Jesse Stuart (Chattanooga, TN / Chiang Rai International Christian School) broke the run with a kill by each. The break didn't last long as the Chargers charged ahead to a 23-11 lead. Stuart pushed one last effort to comeback, but his efforts weren't enough as the set went to Lancaster, 13-25.

The third set was a back and forth battle as the Highlanders and the Chargers would exchange points 7-8 to start the set, with the Chargers having the advantage. The Chargers lost their footing, giving Cairn points through service errors to develop the score to 9-10 before going on a 7-1 run. The highlanders took the momentum after a kill from Stuart, leading to Panaia and freshman setter Micah Taylor (Atco, NJ / Homeschool) to inch back into the game 16-24, but their effort fall short as the Chargers take the third set 16-25 and the match, 3-0.

Panaia and Stuart matched evenly for most kills in the match with 3 apiece while senior setter Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy High School)  played the selfless game, having 11 assists on the night.

The Highlanders will head back home to host Pratt Institute in conference play on Wednesday March 4th at 7pm.
