Langhorne, PA- The Highlanders hosted the Cannoneers from Pratt University in conference play, leaving no doubt with the 3-0 sweep.
The first set started in Pratt's (5-8, 2-1 United East) favor 3-1 as Cairn (5-15, 2-1 United East) had back to back attack errors. Junior outside hitter Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) got the Highlanders rolling with the first kill to go on a 4-1 run to take the lead. Pratt fought back to retake the lead, but two errors and a kill from Poirier later and Cairn regained the advantage. Back to back aces from Pratt gave them hope before Cairn crushed that flame with a kill by Poirier and then freshman opposite Nehemiah Clark (Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea / Ukarumpa International School) before freshman middle hitter Reuben Bennett Leonard (Ankara, Turkey / Oasis International School) hit an ace to seal the deal. A final kill from Clark gave Cairn the set, 25-22.
The second set started well for Cairn as they got a 5-2 lead due to an ace from senior setter Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy High School) and then two kills from senior middle hitter Caleb Cabrera (Wallington, NJ / Wallington). The domination continued as Poirier led a 5-0 run with 2 kills while the team forced 3 errors. Freshman opposite Justin Panaia(Jamison, PA / Dock Mennonite) joined the attack with a kill off an assist from Adler. Adler recorded another assist, crediting the kill to Poirier. The Highlanders did not let up as they quickly ended the set 25-17.
The third set started as a back and forth battle, Cairn started with a quick 3-0 lead with kills from Poirier and Clark, but Pratt crawled back with a 5-0 run. It didn't take long for Cairn to regain momentum as Clark got a kill before Adler set up Leonard to make the score 9-8 in Cairn's favor. Then both teams went stride for stride as every kill for Pratt, Cairn came but with an immediate response. It wasn't till the score became 19-18 due to Poirier, that the Highlanders started to pull away, sealing the deal with the final kill from Clark to take the set, 25-22 and the match, 3-0.
Poirier led the team in digs with 11 and kills with 16, with Clark just behind contributing 11 more kills. Adler controlled the selfless play with 30 assists, adding 2 aces to the mix.
Cairn will remain at home to host the Bison from Gallaudet University, tonight at 7pm in Langhorne, PA.
