BB: Baseball Splits Conference Series with St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD – Baseball split with St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday, a 6-0 shutout loss in game one before winning 9-8 in game two.

GAME ONE
St. Mary's (5-10 / 5-2 UNITED EAST) held the Highlanders scoreless in game one as they jumped ahead early with a 5-0 lead after the second inning. Senior lefty Joe Battaglia (Franklin, TN / Brentwood Academy) entered in relief, giving Cairn (14-10 / 3-3 UNITED EAST) a chance in 6.2 innings of work, only allowing a single unearned run with seven strikeouts, the last of which was his 100th career strikeout. The Highlanders were held to only five hits as the Seahawks' starter went 8.0 innings on 137 pitches.

Senior center fielder Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenandoah University) had two of Cairn's five hits in game one.

GAME TWO
Game two was a different story as Cairn was the first to score as senior designated hitter Tyler Harris (Oxford, PA / Oxford Area) drove in two with a double, adding a third as freshman left fielder Stephen Persiani (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA / Capistrano Valley Christian) executed the safety squeeze.

The Highlanders would add three more in the third as seniors Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College), Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy), junior catcher Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City), and sophomore second baseman Andrew Holt (Sunrise, FL / New College of Florida) all singled to open the frame, bringing a run in before Harris came up with the bases loaded, scoring Warr and Bauers to go up 6-0. In the bottom half, the Seahawks cut the lead to two on three hits. The Seahawks took over control in the fourth, scoring two on a double and taking the lead on an RBI single, 7-6, before adding another run in the fifth on a pair of hits.

Facing a two-run deficit, the Cairn hitters would be patient, working four walks in the seventh inning with Harris getting hit by a pitch with a bases loaded for his 5th RBI on the day. Wikner put the ball in play, allowing junior third baseman Ben Gagnon (Bethlehem, PA / Northampton CC) on an error, giving Cairn a 9-8 lead.

Senior righty Connor Ferguson (Laguna Niguel, CA / Capistrano Valley Christian) would hold down the fort while Cairn took the lead, earning himself the win with a scoreless inning in relief. Junior reliever Greg Jessup (Tyler, TX / McKinney Christian) picked up the save, tossing 3.0 scoreless with one hit and five strikeouts as Cairn won game two, 9-8.

Jackson paced the offense with three hits. Bauers went 2-2 in game two with three walks and three runs scored while Holt and Harris added two hits as well, Harris with 5 RBI and a double.

Cairn will head to Valley Forge for part two of their conference series on Tuesday before another conference series next weekend.
