TRENTON, NJ – Cairn Baseball hosted Penn St. Abington for game under the lights at Trenton Thunder Ballpark on Thursday night, holding on through a late Nittany Lion comeback for a big 5-3 conference win.
Senior right fielder
Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) singled to lead off the first, scoring as sophomore designated hitter
Andrew Holt (Sunrise, FL / New College of Florida) reached on a fielder's choice. Cairn (22-13 / 10-4 UNITED EAST) went on to add four in the bottom of the fourth as senior left fielder
Tyler Harris (Oxford, PA / Oxford Area) singled up the middle to lead off the frame and scoring as sophomore shortstop
Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science) singled. Jackson singled again to put two on base before senior first baseman
Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) lined a single through the left side to score two more. Junior catcher
Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) doubled to score Warr and give the Highlanders a 5-0 lead.
Senior righty
Ethan Fineman (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) kept the Nittany Lions scoreless through six innings of work, striking out four. Penn St. Abington (16-17 / 8-6 UNITED EAST) was able to put some pressure on the Highlanders in the ninth, scoring three and leaving the bases loaded to end the game 5-3.
Fineman would get the win, moving to 5-1 as junior lefty
Nick Benson (Philadelphia, PA / Fathe Judge) tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief after him. Warr would go 3-4 on the night with a pair of RBI. Jackson, Harris, and Bauers each added two hits, Bauers with an RBI double.
Cairn will host Rosemont for their conference finale and senior day on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
