BB: Highlanders Split on Senior Day with Rosemont

LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn Baseball hosted Rosemont College for senior day on Saturday, splitting with the Ravens 16-3 and 6-2.
 
Rosemont (13-25 / 6-10 UNITED EAST) had the first score of the day, scoring on a bases loaded walk to lead 1-0. The Highlanders took over in the third with freshman second baseman Gustavo Villegas (Plantation, FL / Plantation), sophomore shortstop Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science), and senior right fielder Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) all reaching base to start the frame. Senior first baseman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) walked, scoring a run to tie the game, recording his 188th career RBI and becoming the program leader in career RBI's, breaking Caleb Lang's '16 career record. Afterwards, junior catcher Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) reached on an error, scoring two more. Junior third baseman Ben Gagnon (Bethlehem, PA / Northampton CC) singled through the right side, scoring Warr to take a 4-1 lead.
 
Cairn (23-14 / 11-5 UNITED EAST) added six more in the fourth as Jackson and Warr both homered in the inning along with RBI singles for sophomore designated hitter Andrew Holt (Sunrise, FL / New College of Florida) and senior left fielder Tyler Harris (Oxford, PA / Oxford Area), now ahead 10-1. Rosemont would add a pair of runs in the sixth before the Highlanders added another six spot in the bottom half on seven hits to reach the mercy rule after seven innings.
 
Sophomore lefty Zachary Dennis (Midland Park, NJ / Midland Park) took the win (2-1) going four innings scoreless with three strikeouts. Classmate Jack Wright (Telford, PA / Souderton) also threw a scoreless inning in relief. Jackson and Gagnon led the way in game one with three hits apiece, Jackson with a triple shy of the cycle with 2 RBI. Warr added a pair of hits with a home run and 4 RBI as all nine starters in the lineup recorded a hit.
 
Between games, seniors Ethan Fineman (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy), Warr, Carlos Valenzuela (Langhorne, PA / Kentucky Country Day), Brett Bottinger (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Chestnut Hill College), Connor Ferguson (Laguna Niguel, CA / Capistrano Valley Christian School), Joe Battaglia, Ronaldinho Alcin (Miami, FL / North Miami Beach), Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenanoah University), Harris, and Mason Graybill (New Holland, PA / Garden Spot) were recognized for their career accomplishments.
 
It was Cairn's turn to get the scoring started in game two as Warr scored Jackson on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Bottinger got the start for the Highlanders, hurling three scoreless innings with two strikeouts before an hour rain delay. When the rain ended, Rosemont tied the game with an RBI double.
 
Junior lefty Nick Benson (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) threw four scoreless innings after the delay. After Benson's departure, Cairn added a run in the seventh as Wikner scored Villegas on a sacrifice fly. Rosemont answered with three runs on four hits in the eighth, adding two more in the ninth before holding the Highlanders scoreless and winning game two, 6-2.
 
Jackson had another three-hit game in the matinee, going 3-5 with a double.
 
Cairn will head to #4 Penn College next weekend as they secure the #5 seed in the United East Baseball Championship.
