BB: Cairn Spits with St. Elizabeth in Darkness-Shortened Conference Series

LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn Baseball hosted St. Elizabeth for their conference doubleheader, as Cairn was the visiting team on their home field. The Highlanders split the series, winning 15-4 in game one before dropping game two 11-10 as it would be called for darkness.

GAME ONE
Cairn (20-12 / 8-4 UNITED EAST) got things started with a 12-run third inning with two walks and a single to load the bases before senior centerfielder Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenandoah University) was hit by a pitch, picking up an RBI. After a sac fly, junior catcher Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) doubled, scoring two runs and scoring for himself as sophomore designated hitter Andrew Holt (Sunrise, FL / New College of Florida) singled. Senior left fielder Tyler Harris (Oxford, PA / Oxford) then doubled to score two more, Highlanders up 7-0 before a pitching change. The St. Elizabeth (14-18 / 6-7 UNITED EAST) bullpen was welcomed to the game with an error, scoring Harris before senior first baseman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) doubled, scoring three as Bauers scored him with a single in the next plate appearance.

The Eagles would be held scoreless until the fifth where they plated four runs on six hits and an error in the frame.  Cairn added three more in the seventh as senior outfielder Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College), Wikner, and Holt each had RBI doubles in the inning, forcing the mercy rule as St. Elizabeth went down in the bottom of the seventh, 15-4.

Senior righty Ethan Fineman (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) got the start, going four scoreless innings for the win (4-1) with three strikeouts. Senior reliever Mason Graybill (New Holland, PA / Garden Spot) threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. Holt had three hits in game one with two doubles and as many RBI. Jackson, Warr, Bauers, Harris and junior third baseman Ben Gagnon (Bethlehem, PA / Northampton CC) each had two hits, Harris with two doubles as well.

GAME TWO
The backend of the series had St. Elizabeth taking the lead in the first on four hits before Cairn took over, 4-1 , in the third as Wikner and Warr both walked before Bauers doubled and Holt singled to score them. Bauers would score on a passed ball before Holt came in on a single by freshman second baseman Gustavo Villegas (Plantation, FL / Plantation). The Highlanders added three more in the fourth, Jackson scoring as Holt singled again with Bauers and Holt bringing in the sixth and seventh runs as Warr was hit by a pitch and Villegas walked.

The Eagles scored three in the bottom of the fourth, tripling with two outs for a run before scoring another with a wild pitch and passed ball, cutting the lead to 7-4. Holt added another hit with an RBI double as Gagnon scored Wikner to put Cairn up 9-4. St. Elizabeth scored one more in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of errors.

With Cairn's tenth run coming in the sixth, the Eagles cut the lead to three with a two-run home run in the bottom half, 10-7. After Holt had a leadoff walk in the seventh and Gagnon was hit by a pitch, the Highlanders went down in order in the top of the seventh with darkness looming. Two singles to open the bottom of the seventh would spell trouble for Cairn as St. Elizabeth scratched two runs across on an error, tying the game on the second error in the frame and walking it off due to darkness with a bases loaded walk.

Holt went a perfect 4-4 in the finale with 3 RBI and two runs scored as the Highlanders fell 11-10 in seven innings.
