MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Ursinus College matched up with Cairn on Saturday to close out their trip to Myrtle Beach as the Bears won their eighth straight game, defeating the Highlanders 6-4.
Junior designated hitter
Andrew Holt (Sunrise, FL / New College of Florida) had the Highlanders' first hit of the day, a single in the third. Senior centerfielder
Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenandoah University) singled, scoring Holt to put Cairn (7-4 / UNITED EAST) up 1-0. Ursinus (12-3 / CENTENNIAL) took control 2-1 in the bottom half on a pair of hits and an error.
After an uneventful fourth inning, Holt reached again on a fielder's choice, moving to second as freshman shortstop
Gustavo Villegas (Plantation, FL / Plantation) was hit by a pitch and senior right fielder
Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) singled to right, scoring Holt to match the score. The Bears took advantage of another error scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Villegas had a timely hit late in the seventh inning, doubling to score sophomore shortstop
Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science) to tie things back up at 3-3. Ursinus continued to score as they reached on a throwing error and came around to score on a single. Wikner tripled in the eighth as came in to score as junior catcher
Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) put the ball in play to score him.
Ursinus went ahead 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth on two more errors and a hit, playing small ball with a pair of bunts which proved effective. Schurga led off the ninth with a single before the Bears got three straight outs to win the game.
Schurga finished his trip with three hits going 3-4. Wikner and Holt each added a pair of hits, Wikner with a triple and an RBI.
Senior lefty
Brett Bottinger (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Chestnut Hill College) got the start, going four innings with four runs allowed none of which earned, and three strikeouts for the no-decision. Junior relievers
Nick Benson (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) and
Greg Jessup (Tyler, TX / McKinney Christian) pitched 2.2 and 1.2 innings, respectively, neither allowing an earned run as Jessup (0-1) took the loss as the Cairn pitching staff continued their streak of 19 innings without allowing an earned run.
The Highlanders make the trip back to Langhorne and will open up at home against Muhlenberg at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
