MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Highlanders took on Bridgewater State Baseball on Friday afternoon as they were shutout by the Bears, 1-0.
As the Bears went down in order in the first, Cairn (7-3 / UNITED EAST) threatened with two runners in scoring position but were unable to bring them in to score. The Highlanders put together a pair of singles in the third, grounding into a double play to end the momentum and keeping the game tied.
Bridgewater State (3-6 / MASCAC) had a runner reach and moved into scoring position with two outs in the fourth, scoring on a single to take the lead. A two-out double in the bottom half for Cairn put the Highlanders in a position to match but couldn't find a timely hit to score. The Bears had runners on in the fifth, looking to keep building on the lead but made a baserunning blunder which turned into an inning-ending double play.
The Highlanders would go down in order to close out the final three innings as a lack of offense would give Bridgewater State the 1-0 win. Sophomore ace
Mikey Gutierrez (Cooper City, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas) threw his second complete game of the week, allowing no earned runs through nine innings with four hits and six strikeouts.
Cairn will close out their stretch of games in South Carolina on Saturday, facing Ursinus College at 9 am.
