BB: Warr Homers Twice to Take Two From Olivet

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Cairn Baseball took two games in their evening doubleheader with Olivet on Thursday night, 10-4 and 9-2.

GAME ONE
With Cairn (7-2 / UNITED EAST) as the visiting team in game one, the Highlanders got the scoring started first as senior right fielder Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) lead off with a triple. After a baserunning miscue on what would have scored a run, classmate Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) was able to score him on a sacrifice fly with one out. The Comets answered in the bottom half, tying the game at one from a single and triple.

Sophomore designated hitter Andrew Holt (Sunrise, FL / New College of Florida) gave Cairn the lead back with a two-out solo shot to right field, his first collegiate home run. The Highlanders broke it open in the third with the top of the lineup back up. Jackson and senior centerfielder Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shendandoah University) singled to lead off with Wikner stealing second to put two in scoring position for Warr who drove in both runs with a double. Warr stole third and scored on a throwing error to make the lead 5-1.

Olivet (1-10 / MIAA) homered in the fourth after a dropped foul ball to make it 5-2 until Warr came around to score on a single by sophomore shortstop Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science) to get the run right back. Warr homered in the sixth with two runners on base, pushing the lead to 10-2. The Comets loaded the bases in the sixth, scoring two to make the Highlander lead 10-4 as Cairn hung on to win game one.

Senior righty Ethan Fineman (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) tossed five innings, allowing only two runs, one earned, and four strikeouts. for the win (1-0). Junior reliever Greg Jessup (Tyler, TX / McKinney Christian) went one and a third scoreless to shut the door.

Warr and Holt each had three hits, Warr going 3-3 with a home run, double and 6 RBI while Holt went yard and 3-4. Jackson and Schurga both went 2-4, Jackon with a triple and Schurga tallying a pair of RBI.

GAME TWO
The Highlanders picked up right where they left off to start the night cap as Warr got started on a two-out double. Junior catcher Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) beat out an infield single as did junior third baseman Ben Gagnon (Bethlehem, PA / Northampton CC), the latter of which scored Warr. Schurga came up and doubled, scoring Bauers to win the first inning, 2-0.

Cairn would add a five-spot in the fifth beginning with Warr's second home run on the day, scoring Wikner. Bauers walked and Gagnon laced a triple down the right field line to score him. Schurga added an RBI single to score Gagnon before junior left fielder Noah Rush (Perkasie, PA / Lehigh Carbon CC) singled in Schurga.

A 7-0 lead put junior righty Evan Hughes (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) in line for the win as he shut Olivet down through five scoreless innings, striking out five while surrendering only a pair of hits. After Hughes' exit, the Comets scored a pair in the sixth on a string of three hits. Jackson walked to open the bottom half and came all the way around on an inside the park homer by Wikner to go ahead 9-2.

Sophomore relievers Jack Wright (Telford, PA / Souderton) and Kenny Smith (Universal City, TX / Clarks Summit University) each had two thirds of an inning to seal the win without allowing a run.

On the offensive side, Gagnon had three hits, one of which was a triple, and two RBI. Warr added two more hits and another home run to his day while Bauers, Schurga, and Rush also had two hits.
