MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The battle of the northeast teams was theme for Cairn Baseball's Wednesday matinee against New Jersey City University at Pelicans Ballpark as the Highlanders dropped their first game of the trip, 9-2.

New Jersey City (5-1-1 / NJAC) was first to score, driving in a run on a single. The Highlanders tied it in the bottom half as junior catcher
Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) led off with a pit by pitch and senior right fielder
Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) singled, for his 100
th career hit. Senior designated hitter
Tyler Harris (Oxford, PA / Oxford Area) was also plunked, loading the bases as junior third baseman
Ben Gagnon (Bethlehem, PA / Northampton CC) worked a walk for an RBI.

The Gothic Knights took the lead in the fourth on a walk and a triple, holding Cairn (5-2 / UNITED EAST) scoreless in the bottom half. The Highlanders wouldn't be held without an answer for long as sophomore designated hitter
Andrew Holt (Sunrise, FL / New College of Florida) recorded his first collegiate hit with a single to left and senior first baseman
Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) put the ball in play and forced an error, scoring Holt from first.

The sixth inning would be where things went awry for Cairn, allowing six runs on five hits and a pair of errors for New Jersey City to go ahead 9-2. Junior left fielder
Noah Rush (Perkasie, PA / Lehigh Carbon CC) getting hit by a pitch and a hit for Gagnon in the bottom half would be the lone response, coming up short of a score as the Highlanders were held scoreless for the reminder of the game.

Senior relievers
Carlos Valenzuela (Langhorne, PA / Kentucky Country Day) and
Connor Ferguson (Laguna Niguel, CA / Capistrano Valley Christian School) each tossed a scoreless inning in relief but the damage was already done.

Gagnon had two hits on the afternoon as Jackson and Holt rounded out the only Highlanders with a hit.

Cairn Baseball will be back in action at the Ripken Experience Complex on Thursday night for a double header with Olivet at 6 and 9 pm.
