LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn Lacrosse hosted St. Joseph's – Long Island for their home opener on Saturday, falling 12-10 after a late comeback from the Golden Eagles.
St. Joseph's – Long Island (1-0 / SKYLINE) scored first, under a minute into the game, before senior attackman
Jacob Lingerman (Goshen, NY / Goshen) got on the attack with back-to-back goals, the later assisted by classmate
Jason Briant (Lake Hiawatha, NJ / Morris Catholic). As the Golden Eagles matched the score, Lingerman scored twice more, assisted by junior attackman
Cole Heffler (Eldersburg, MD / Central Maryland Christian) on the first, for his fourth of the game. Sophomore attackman
Luke Fowler (Landenberg, PA / Wilmington Christian) scored, assisted by Lingerman, to put Cairn (0-3 / UNITED EAST) ahead 5-2. Heffler added a goal to go up 6-2 with the Golde Eagles scoring another and Lingerman finishing off the first period in the closing seconds with his fifth of the game and the Highlanders ahead 7-3 at the break.
Out of the gate in the second, the Golden Eagles scored a pair, cutting the lead to two, as Heffler scored back-to-back goals, the former assisted by junior attackman
Adain Holliday (New York, NY / Urban Assembly Maker), to extend the lead back (9-5). St. Joseph's would have the parting shot in the first half as they scored with a minute and fifteen seconds to go.
After the break, Briant scored for the Highlanders to go ahead 10-6 as the Golden Eagles would go on to score five in the third period and one more in the fourth, all unanswered, to win the game 12-10.
Lingerman finished with a game-high five goals and an assist for six points, all in the first quarter. Heffler added three goals with an assist while Fowler and Briant rounded out the scoring for Cairn. Holliday assisted on a goal while picking up a game-high 14 ground balls and was 15-22 on faceoffs.
Cairn will begin a stretch of three road games starting with FDU-Florham on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
