WSOC: Highlanders Fall in 2nd Half Shootout

CHAMBERSBURG, PA -- Cairn traveled to Wilson College on Tuesday to face the Phoenix, falling 2-1.

The game started out heavily in Wilson's (3-6-2, 2-2 UNITED EAST) favor, getting off five shots in the first ten minutes. Cairn (1-8-1, 0-3 UNITED EAST) had a solid defensive effort to keep it a level match. The Highlanders had an offensive push and manged to get off three shots before halftime, but were unable to convert. The first half ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

The Phoenix started off hot in the second half, getting off 2 shots before scoring in the 49th minute to make it 1-0, then continued to get another 6 chances before the Highlanders could get one. This pressure built well into the second half when Wilson was able to make it 2-0 with a goal in the 80th minute. Cairn was able to get one back with a goal by sophomore defender Abby Mellinger (Telford, PA / Dock Mennonite) off of a corner in the 90th minute, assisted by sophomore forward Josey Smith (Levittown, PA / Pennsbury). Cairn's efforts were not enough as the game ended in a 2-1 victory for Wilson.

Mellinger got her first goal of the season as Smith got her fifth assist on the season.

Cairn will travel to Baltimore, Maryland on October 11th to face Notre Dame at 3pm.
