READING, PA—The Highlanders traveled to Reading PA to face off against Penn State Berks, securing a 2-0 win to earn their spot in the United East playoffs.
The matched started off being all Cairn (4-9-3, 3-4-1 United East) as freshman forward Zane Wheeler (Addison, NY / Addison Central) seeing the first chance of the match, but ended up sending it high left, but the Highlanders didn't stop there, managing to get off seven more shots while holding Penn State Berks (3-14-1, 2-5-1 United East) to only one shot. The goal to break the stalemate came from sophomore midfielder Kaleb Demoraes (São Paulo, Brazil / Calvary Christian Academy) in the 39th minute. The first half ended 1-0 in Cairn's favor.
The Nittany Lions managed to see the first scoring chance of the second half but failed to convert the opportunity as junior goalkeeper Xander Jakeway (Lancaster, CA / Quartz Hill High School) was up to the task and made the save. Cairn took back the momentum to have the next four chances before making the score 2-0 with a goal in the 63rd minute by junior midfielder Braden Allen (Dillsburg, PA / Heritage Christian Academy). The Highlanders kept up the pressure and had the next nine shots, but Berk's defense managed to keep the Highlanders out. The game ended with a score of 2-0 with the win going to Cairn.
The Cairn University Highlanders punched their ticket to the playoffs with a record of 3-4-1, landing them in 7th place.
Demoraes landed his first goal of the season while Allen scored his 3rd goal of the season. Jakeway landed his first shutout of the season.
The Highlanders will next play Wilson College on Oct 28th in Langhorne, Pa in the opening round to decide who moves on.
