MSOC: Highlanders Rally Falls Short as Nittany Lions Strike Late for 3-1 Win

ABINGTON, PA-- The Highlanders traveled on Tuesday to face off verses the Nittany Lions of Penn State Abington. Final score was 3-1 as the Nittany Lions made the comeback to secure the victory.

The first half started of fast and hot as Penn State Abington (8-6-3, 6-1 United East) got off two quick shots in the first 3 minutes of the game, but the score stay at 0-0 as both shots were off target. Cairn (3-9-3, 2-4-1 United East) gained the momentum with an early goal in the 13th minute, as junior forward Alijah Miller (Monroe, NC / Homeschool) hit a beautiful free kick to give the Highlanders the lead. It didn't take long for the Nittany Lions to answer back as they leveled the game 1-1 in the 20th minute. Abington was able to keep the pressure as they got off 2 more shots in the 26th and 38th minutes, but both were off target. Cairn had the final chance of the half in the 44th minute as junior defender Michael Monte Carlo (West Deptford, NJ / West Deptford HS) sought to get his first goal as a highlander, with a shot low and straight down the middle, but the Nittany Lion's goalkeeper was up to the task and made the save. The score remained 1-1 as the game went into halftime.

The second half started off slow as neither team got a chance in the first 13 minutes. Abington saw the first chances of the half with a shot in the 58th and 59th minutes, but Cairn's defense was up to the task and blocked both of them. Sophomore midfielder Evan Soriano (Morrisville, PA / Pennsbury) saw the Highlanders first chance of the second half with a low shot to the left side of the goal, but it was saved by the Nittany Lion's goalkeeper to keep the score 1-1. The game stayed even for a majority of the second half, until the Nittany Lions found the lead with a goal in the 84th minute followed by a third goal in the 87th minute to secure the win. Penn State Abington came out on top with a final score of 3-1.

Miller's goal made it 10 on the season for him.

The Highlanders will travel on October 25th to Reading, Pa for their final game of the regular season against Penn State Berks at 1pm.
