MBB: Tale of Two Halves Lifts Bryn Athyn Over Cairn

BRYN ATHYN, PA – Cairn Women's Basketball faced the Bryn Athyn College Lions at Asplundh Field House, dropping their conference battle with the Lions, after a late comeback push, 67-54.

Bryn Athyn (13-8 / 11-1 UNITED EAST) established a commanding lead in the first half, outscoring the Highlanders 40-17 as Cairn (10-10 / 7-4 UNITED EAST) shot 24.1% from the field and 1-10 from deep in the half. Graduate guard Jaylon Simpson (Atlanta, GA / Belmont Abbey) had seven points in the frame as the Highlanders struggled to find a spark.

After regrouping, Cairn was able to get the lead below twenty on key scores by graduate guard Jadon Cepeda (West New York, NJ / William Paterson) and a three from the hand of classmate Jeff Williamson (Brooklyn, NY / SUNY Potsdam). Simpson would lead the squad on a 16-4 run over the course of five minutes to close in at 54-44 with four minutes to play. The Lions sprung back to life late, knocking down the majority of their free throws and three late layups to keep their distance. Despite a stronger performance in the second half, where the Highlanders scored 37 points to the Lions' 27, the early deficit proved insurmountable.

Cairn's offense was led this time by Simpson, who scored a game-high 26 points, shooting 9-of-20 from the field and 7-of-9 from the free-throw line with a three-pointer. Senior guard Ashton West (Newport Beach, CA / Clarks Summit University) contributed 6 points, and fifth year forward Isaiah Coleman (Fontana, CA / Clarks Summit University) added 6 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

The Highlanders struggled with shooting efficiency, completing 33.3% of their field goals and 11.1% (2-18) from beyond the arc. In contrast, the Lions shot 50% from the field and 47.1% from three-point range.

The Highlanders will aim to get back above .500 on Saturday as they host Penn St. Abington on senior day.
