LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn Men's Soccer hosted Acadia University in their home opener, Wednesday night, shutting out the Knights 2-0.
Senior forward
Geon Jung (Seoul, South Korea / International School of Wuxi) barely let the defense get settled before he put Cairn (1-0-1) ahead in the third minute of the match. Arcadia (2-1) tried to respond on the next possession with a shot off target as the Highlanders held them to only four shots in the first half. Sophomore forward
Alijah Miller (Monroe, NC / Homeschool) managed to fire off three shots down the stretch in the closing minutes of the half as Cairn took a 1-0 lead to the break.
Two of Arcadia's three shots of the latter half would come in the opening minutes of second half action as the Highlander defense held strong and kept the ball out of the Knights' offensive midfield. A pair of key corner kicks in the 68
th and 72
nd minutes for Arcadia were sent away by the Highlanders. As the end approached, Arcadia's hopes were renewed as they approached a free kick from about 15 yards in front of the box with under three minutes to play. The kick was deflected off of several Highlanders before it was sent to senior forward
Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) waiting in the wings who broke away from his defender after an assisting pass by Miller, breaking left on the goalie and scoring Cairn's second goal. The Knights scrambled with the game now further out of their reach, getting off one last shot before the final whistle sounded.
Jung netted his first goal of the season on the only shot he took on the evening. Brittain's was his second in as many games on the young season. Sophomore goalkeeper
Xander Jakeway (Lancaster, CA / Quartz Hill) collected a clean sheet in his fourth career shutout with a single save on the night thanks to an incredible defensive showing on the back line. Cairn outshot Arcadia 17-7, holding the Knights to a single shot on goal.
Cairn Men's Soccer is back in action Saturday as they play host to Ramapo College at 7 p.m.
