MSOC: Smallwood Nets Game Winner for Homecoming Conference Win

LANGHORNE, PA – Cairn Men's Soccer hosted the Notre Dame of Maryland University Gators for a Homecoming and conference opening matchup at Cairn on Saturday, collecting their first conference win over the Gators, 3-1.

After a barrage of sixteen shots from Cairn (3-2-4 / 1-0 United East) int the first half coming up empty, sophomore forward Alijah Miller (Monroe, NC / Homeschool) broke the tie in the 55th minute, assisted by senior forward Team Celly NDMMoses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Twp.). Just three minutes later, fifth year forward Geon Smallwood (Galloway, NJ / Pilgrim Academy) hit the back of the net, crossing a shot to the near side after a set of up-field passes by graduate midfielder Matt Lungu (Lilongwe, Malawi / African Bible College - Malawi) and senior midfielder Jack Fiacco (Sunderland, MD / Northern), who earned assists.

Notre Dame (2-6 / 1-1 United East) netted their first goal in the 63rd minute to cut the Highlander lead in half. Smallwood would have none of that, and after six Cairn shots on goal, the fifth year would record his second goal of the half, assisted by Miller. Smallwood's first goal would prove to be the game winner as Cairn held on to take a 3-1 victory in their conference opener.

Smallwood totaled two goals, his first career multi-goal game. Miller had a goal and assist while Lungu and Fiacco also picked up assists on the day.

Cairn is back in conference action on Wednesday as they join Cairn Women's Soccer at Lancaster Bible College for the nightcap, kicking off at 7:30 p.m.
