BB: Spadea's 3-Run Homer Puts Highlanders Over Griffins

LANGHORNE, PA - The Cairn University Baseball team extended their winning streak to six games as they downed the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins, 9-4.

Gwynedd Mercy (9-23) got on the board first in the fourth, scoring on a triple to right center going ahead 2-0. The Highlanders cut the lead to one in the bottom half as junior right fielder Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) was hit by a pitch, advancing to third and scoring on a sacrifice fly from sophomore catcher Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City). Cairn (23-13 / 14-4 UNITED EAST SKYE DIVISION) took the lead in the fifth as junior left fielder Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenandoah University) singled and freshman shortstop Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science) walked. Fifth year designated hitter Tyler Fox (Boyertown, PA / West-Mont Christian Academy) doubled, scoring Wikner and advancing Schurga who scored on a wild pitch. Jackson tripled to right, scoring Fox before he scored on a wild pitch as well, Cairn now up 5-2.

The Griffins scored in the top of the sixth as they got some traffic on the bases, scoring one run with a sacrifice fly. Fox worked a walk in the seventh as freshman centerfielder Zachary Johnson (Hawaii Kai, HI / TCS Post Grad) singled up the middle to score him. Gwynedd cut the lead to two, 6-4, before Cairn added three more in the bottom of the eighth with fifth year third baseman Sam Spadea's (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) three-run home run, driving in Bauers and classmate Joe Greenwood (Wall, NJ / Calvary Academy) to go ahead 9-4, which was the final score.

Junior first baseman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) went 2-4 in the matchup, Spadea recorded a game-high 3 RBI with his only hit of the day being the three-run home run. On the mound, junior lefty Brett Bottinger (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Chestnut Hill College) picked up his first win of the season, throwing 5.0 innings. Sophomore reliever Greg Jessup (Tyler, TX / McKinney Christian) threw a scoreless inning of relief with 2 strikeouts in the team win.
