MVB: Highlanders Win Three-in-a-Row with Sweep of Valley Forge

LANGHORNE, PA – The Cairn Highlanders Men's Volleyball team won their third straight on Wednesday night as they hosted the Patriots of Valley Forge, sweeping the competition, 3-0.
 
NOTABLES
  • Senior opposite hitter Joe Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) struck for 10 kills as graduate middle hitter Jake Tolar (Fort Mill, SC / Nation Ford) had nine with two block assists.
  • Freshman outside hitter Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) and junior middle hitter Tommy Ragonese (Buffalo, NY / Royalton-Hartland High School) each had five kills, Poirier with two block assists and Ragonese with one.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cairn (4-12 / 3-0 UNITED EAST) got ahead 8-4 early by kills from S. Poirier and Ragonese, Tolar adding a kill to stay ahead 12-6 as Valley Forge (7-10 / 0-2 UNITED EAST) looked for a comeback.
  • The Patriots would come back to within a point before Cairn pulled away with two more kills from Tolar and finishing off the set with a kill by J. Poirier.
  • The squads traded points until the Highlanders went up 9-6 on a kill and ace from J. Poirier.
  • With Valley Forge threatening, sophomore setter Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) dropped in back-to-back aces to hold onto the lead.
  • The Patriots tied the game at 22-22 before J. Poirier put the set away again with two kills late.
  • Cairn was up 9-3 and 16-9 in the third before Valley Forge saw a glimpse of hope, rallying back on a 10-3 run to tie the game, 20-20.
  • Tolar, junior outside hitter Jake Gabriels (Philadelphia, PA / Logos International School), and sophomore middle hitter David Larbi (Bensalem, PA / Bensalem) each added a kill to gain some distance as Tolar ended the match with an untouched ace to take the set, 25-23.
 
GAME NOTES
  • All eight non-liberos/setters recorded kills.
  • Freshman libero Jireh Ang (Singapore / Dalat International School) picked up the first two assist of his career.
 
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
  • Cairn hosts Lancaster Bible for a rematch of the 2023 conference championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. inside the Mason Activity Center.
