BB: Highlanders Fall to Diplomats Despite Late Heroics

LANGHORNE, PA – The Cairn Baseball team hosted the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall College from the Centennial Conference on Wednesday afternoon at home, falling 10-9 despite a late threat.

NOTABLES
  • Junior first baseman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) and fifth year third baseman Sam Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) each went 3-5 with three RBI
  • Fifth year second baseman Joe Greenwood (Wall, NJ / Calvary Academy) added two hits with an RBI and run scored while junior outfielder Tyler Harris (Oxford, PA / Oxford Area HS) and fifth year DH Tyler Fox (Boyertown, PA / West-Mont Christian Academy) each recorded a hit.
  • Senior righty Ethan Fineman (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) and sophomore reliever Greg Jessup (Tyler, TX / McKinney Christian Academy) were seemingly untouchable, Fineman pitched 2.2 innings, six batters and allowing the only hit amongst the pair as Jessup threw 2.0 innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Franklin & Marshall (5-10) put up seven runs in the top of the first as the Diplomats hit a triple shy of the cycle as a team in the frame.
  • Cairn (7-6) answered with an RBI double by Warr. F&M got the run back in the third on an RBI double of their own.
  • In the bottom half, the Highlanders were on the comeback as Warr drove in a pair on a single, another on an error, Spadea adding a 2 RBI double, and Greenwood scoring Spadea on a single to make it 8-6.
  • The Diplomats added some more room to their lead with a run each in the 6th and 7th.
  • Greenwood scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the 7th putting Cairn down only one, 10-9.
  • The tying and go-ahead runs would be stranded in the bottom of the 8th as the game would be called due to darkness before the ninth inning could be played.

GAME NOTES
  • Fineman's six strikeouts marks a career-high for the senior reliever.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
  • Cairn prepares to host the Giants of Keystone College on Friday afternoon for Skye Division conference play at 3 p.m. before heading to La Plume on Saturday to complete the 3-game set.
