BB: Highlanders Drop Game One with Keystone

LANGHORNE, PA – The Highlanders were host to the Keystone College Giants on Friday afternoon for game one of the United East Skye Division Baseball 3-game set. The late comeback effort was not enough for Cairn as the Highlanders fell 5-4.

Fifth year third baseman Sam Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) got things started in the second inning, leading off with a single to left center. Classmate Tyler Fox (Boyertown, PA / West-Mont Christian Academy) got on base via walk. Fifth year second baseman Joe Greenwood (Wall, NJ / Calvary Academy) moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, bringing up freshman shortstop Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science) who put the ball in play leading to a 2-run error by Keystone to put Cairn (7-7 / 3-1 Skye Division) in the lead.

The Giants got one back in the third, scoring on a single up the middle. Keystone (9-5 / 1-0 Skye Division) took the lead in the top of the sixth, working the bases loaded and driving in a pair of runs to go up 3-2, adding a homer to their lead in their next turn at bat. In the top of the ninth, Keystone brought one more across to score, putting their lead at 5-2. Greenwood got aboard in the bottom half with a walk, Schurga getting on as well with a single. Freshman center fielder Zachary Johnson (Hawaii Kai, HI / TCS Post Grad Academy) and sophomore catcher Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) walked, loading the bases and Bauers bringing in a run, making it 5-3. Junior first baseman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) reached on an error, scoring a run to cut the Giants' lead to one. The Highlanders could not get the tying run across, dropping game one, 5-4.

Bauers had a pair of hits on the day, going 2-4 with the sole RBI for the Highlanders. Spadea, Fox, and Schurga each tallied a hit.

The Highlanders head to La Plume for games two and three of the series on Sunday (rain date Monday) for a 12 & 2 p.m. doubleheader.
