MVB: Highlanders Fall to Widener Pride 3-0

CHESTER, PA – The Cairn University Men's Volleyball team was swept 3-0 by Widener on the road Tuesday night.

NOTABLES:
  • Freshman outside hitter Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) led the Highlanders again with 8 kills and a block assists.
  • Senior opposite hitter Joe Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu), sophomore middle hitter David Larbi (Bensalem, PA / Bensalem), and senior outside hitter Noah Ruiz Esparza (Levittown, PA / Berean Academy) each had three kills, Larbi recording a pair of aces and five digs.
  • Sophomore setter Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) added 18 assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Widener (3-2) opened with six straight points, getting the lead up to 20-10 and taking the first set 25-13.
  • Cairn (0-5) scored the first point of the second set with the Pride taking a 4-2 lead right from there. Larbi dropped in an ace to keep the Highlanders within striking distance down 9-7. That would be as close as Cairn got as Widener pulled away and took the set 25-15.
  • The Pride got out to an early lead once more in the third set but Larbi and Joe Poirier fired over kills to keep Widener on their toes.
  • The Highlanders showed some fight down the stretch in the third set with Larbi adding his second ace of the night and Ruiz Esparza managing a kill to tie things up at 23 apiece. When WIderner fired back, Sam Poirier was there to tie it up again at 24-24. Widener forced a ball handling error and ace to take the game in the final set, 26-24.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE:
  • Cairn Men's Volleyball hosts New Jersey City University on Thursday night at 7 p.m. inside the Mason Activity Center.
  • The squad then heads to Drew University for a tri-match between Cairn, Drew, and #7 St. John Fisher.
