MVB: Highlanders Lose Duel With Gothic Knights

LANGHORNE, PA - The Cairn University Men's Volleyball team dueled the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on Thursday night, losing the fight 3-0. 


NOTABLES:
  • Freshman outside hitter Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) recorded a team-high 6 kills. 
  • Graduate middle hitter Jake Tolar (Fort Mill, SC / Nation Ford) had a season-high 5 kills, hitting at a .500 rate with three block assists as he defended the Gothic Knight attack.
HOW IT PLAYED OUT:
  • The Highlanders kept things close early in the first set as neither squad got ahead by more than two.
  • New Jersey City (1-5) pulled away from a 6-6 tie, quickly going up 20-9 on a run and taking the first set 25-14.
  • Cairn (0-6) was able to maintain striking distance in the second, battling back to tie the set 10-10. 
  • The Gothic Knights ran ahead again, holding a 20-13 advantage on solid serves, and took the set 25-15
  • Two kills from Poirier got Cairn a 4-1 lead with NJCU evening things up at 6-6.
  • A kill by Tolar kept the Highlanders down by a point with the Gothic Knights looking to pull away again. 
  • NJCU would get back on a run to take the game in the final set, 25-16. 
     
UPCOMING SCHEDULE:
  • The Highlanders face Drew University (11 a.m.) and St. John Fisher (1 p.m.) on Saturday in a tri-match at Drew University.
