MVB: Highlanders Drop Rematch with Neumann

LANGHORNE, PA - The Cairn Highlanders Men's Volleyball team hosted Neumann University for a rematch on Thursday night where they fell 3-0 to the Knights.

NOTABLES:
  • Freshman outside hitter Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) was back in double figures with 10 kills and a pair of block assists for 11 points. 
  • Senior opposite hitter Joe Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) had seven kills with two block assists of his own while graduate middle hitter Jake Tolar (Fort Mill, SC / Nation Ford) picked up 8.5 points on a career-high seven total blocks.
  • Junior middle hitter Tommy Ragonese (Buffalo, NY / Royalton-Hartland High School) and senior outside hitter Noah Ruiz Esparza (Levittown, PA / Berean Academy) each added three kills, Ragonese with the only Highlander solo block and Ruiz Esparza with a team-high two aces. 
  • Sophomore setter Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) helped with 24 assists and 10 digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Neumann (9-5 / 1-1 Atlantic East) opened on an 8-1 run before the Highlanders cut the lead in half. The Knights charged forward until J. Poirier was able to cut the lead to two on back-to-back kills.
  • The Neumann run continued as Cairn (1-11) worked to get back into the fight, eventually taking set one, 25-21.
  • The second set was evenly played early, with neither squad pulling ahead until the Knights went up 8-5. Cairn answered right back, tying things at 8-8 behind a kill from S. Poirier.
  • Cairn took a 15-13 lead, extending it to 17-14 on an ace from Ruiz Esparza. Neumann immediately answered, taking the lead back, 18-17 on four straight points.
  • With the set tied at 20, the Knights ran away on a 5-1 pace to take the second frame by the same score, 25-21.
  • The Highlanders opened the third on a 7-2 run with two early kills from J. Poirier. Neumann fought right back, taking a 8-7 lead on six straight points. 
  • The Knights then went ahead, 13-10 and kept on pushing until Cairn tied things up at 14-14. Each side traded kills before Neumann came out ahead 22-19. 
  • S. Poirirer managed back-to-back kills to bring the score to 22-21, Neumann answered back with one of their own kills. Poirier added another before Neumann took the final two points and the match, 25-22.

  • The Highlanders host Drew University for a Friday night finale in Langhorne at 7 p.m.
