MVB: Cairn Falls to Drew in Rematch at Home

LANGHORNE, PA – The Cairn Men's Volleyball team hosted their rematch with Drew University on Friday night as the Rangers swept the Highlanders, 3-0.
 
NOTABLES:
  • Senior opposite hitter Joe Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) compiled 11 kills with an ace and block assist for 12.5 points.
  • Freshman outside hitter Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) added seven kills.
  • Senior outside hitter Noah Ruiz Esparza (Levittown, PA / Berean Academy) tied a season high six kills, adding two block assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Cairn (1-12) got ahead early in the first set, taking a 7-3 lead behind kills from Ruiz Esparza and S. Poirier.
  • Drew (9-10) answered, tying the game and taking an 11-10 lead. Each squad scattered points before the Rangers went ahead 22-17 in pursuit of taking the first set, which they did 25-22 only after Ruiz Esparza and J. Poirier each had kills for a try at the late comeback.
  • The Rangers led the way out of the gate in the second set, holding a 6-1 advantage early, adding to it along the way, 9-3.
  • Drew got ahead 17-11 before the Highlander comeback was on, sophomore setter Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) finding a kill and junior middle hitter Tommy Ragonese (Buffalo, NY / Royalton-Hartland High School) dropping in an ace to bring the score back to 17-15.
  • The Rangers would rally, going ahead 23-17. Cairn answered with 5 straight points including a pair of kills by Ruiz Esparza. Drew would throw the final punch, taking the second set, 25-23.
  • Cairn opened ahead 4-1 in the third set until Drew tied it up at four points apiece. The Rangers got ahead 15-11 as the Highlanders scrambled for an answer. They would get the serve back where J. Poirier and Ragonese each added aces, cutting the deficit to two, 21-19.
  • Drew would be on the attack in one last effort, taking the set 25-20.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE:
  • The Highlanders will head to New York City to face Pratt as they kick off United East conference play on March 12.
    • The match will be played at St. Joseph's University Brooklyn
