MVB: Poirier Brothers Combine for 30 Kills as Late Comeback Falls Short

ASTON, PA – The Cairn University Men's Volleyball team was back on the road Thursday night after a week off, as they faced the Neumann University Knights. Neumann held the 3-1 advantage despite a late comeback by Cairn.

NOTABLES:
  • The duo of senior opposite hitter Joe Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) and freshman outside hitter Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) each recorded 15 kills, the former also adding a pair of aces on the night.
  • Sophomore setter Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) assisted on 34 kills, a season-high.
  • Graduate middle hitter Jake Tolar (Fort Mill, SC / Nation Ford) added 6 kills with three block assists.
HOW IT PLAYED OUT:

  • The Poiriers would manage a kill apiece early before Neumann ran ahead 11-6. The Highlanders cut the distance on two kills from Sam Poirier, forcing a pair of errors by the Knights as the game went to 18-15.
  • Neumann found space on the attack on the Cairn side, dropping in an ace to take the second set 25-20.
  • The Knights got ahead again early in the third until senior outside hitter Noah Ruiz Esparza (Levittown, PA / Berean Academy) gave the Highlanders a 9-8 lead on a kill, keeping the lead in hand as Neumann tried to run again.
  • The Highlanders would score nine straight points behind two aces and a kill from Joe Poirier, forcing a Neumann timeout to regroup.
  • J. Poirier would add two more as Cairn held on to take set three, 25-22.
