Men's Soccer: Highlanders Battle to a Draw After a Late Goal from Brittain

LANGHORNE, PA - The Cairn University Men's Soccer team squared off with Penn State – Harrisburg in a United East crossover matchup on a steamy Sunday afternoon in Langhorne, battling to a 1-1 draw.

The contest was dictated by defense early, with freshman goalkeeper Xander Jakeway (Lancaster, CA / Quartz Hill High School) saving all seven of the Penn State Harrisburg (0-1-1) shots on goal in the first half. Junior midfielder Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township) provided the only offense in the first half for Cairn (0-1-1) with a shot at the 29th minute that sailed wide, en route to a scoreless tie at the intermission. The Highlanders found themselves trailing in the second half as the Lions took the lead in the 68th minute of play. The Highlanders roared back with a flurry of golden opportunities at the net from junior forward Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) and freshman forward Alijah Miller (Monroe, NC / Homeschool) but were of no avail until Beers connected with Brittain via a deflection by senior defender Joshua Smith (Attleboro, MA / Homeschooled) on a free kick outside the box to knot the game up at one apiece in the 83rd minute, Brittain's first goal of the season. Beers' assist was his 27th all-time, which places him in sole possession of 6th place in assists in program history. The Lions produced five more shots following the Highlander goal, but none found the back of the net.

Despite outshooting the Highlanders 19-4 (8-2 on goal), the Lions could not capitalize on their advantage thanks to a stunning defensive performance by Jakeway in his debut, accumulating seven saves on the afternoon. Brittain took two shots, leading the Highlanders in the contest with Beers and Miller taking the other two shots for Cairn.

The Highlanders return to the pitch on Wednesday on the road at Arcadia University in Glenside, PA for a non-conference match at 4 PM.
