GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - The Cairn University Women's Soccer team headed to Gwynedd Mercy University on Friday night, forcing a 1-1 draw in the closing minutes.
Cairn (1-3-1) looked to get on the board with nine shots in the first half, three-each from graduate student defender
Rachel Yoder (Telford, PA / Souderton) and senior midfielder
Teresa Lee (Jackson, NJ / Calvary Academy), but the half closed in a 0-0 tie with neither squad able to find the back of the net. Gwynedd Mercy (4-3-1) looked to spark their own offense to start the second half, getting off six quick shots in the first 25 minutes of play. The Griffins went ahead in the 74th minute with a goal off of a corner kick to take the lead 1-0. The Highlanders would look to push the pace to get things back to even with a shot from Lee in the 84th minute that was saved by the Griffins. Yoder would look for another opportunity and find the net in the 86th minute with the game-tying goal. Cairn would hold off the Griffins' final shot of the match as they forced the 1-1 draw.
Gwynedd Mercy held the advantage in total shots, 15-14, while Cairn produced 10 shots on goal to Gwynedd Mercy's 7. Yoder led in shooting with five shots and a goal followed by Lee with four. Senior goalkeeper
Isabelle Portis (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian High School) would collect six saved in 90 minutes of play.
Cairn Women's Soccer opens up United East Skye Division conference play on Tuesday, hosting the Falcons of Cedar Crest College at 4 p.m.
