LANGHORNE, PA - The Cairn University Women's Soccer team took on the Cyclones of Centenary University on Saturday afternoon as part of a Cairn Soccer doubleheader. The Highlanders collected their first win of the season, holding off Centenary 3-2 in regulation.
Cairn (1-3) took the lead in the 35th minute from senior midfielder
Becca Marzinke's (Quakertown, PA / Upper Bucks Christian) first goal of the season, assisted by senior defender
Grace Miller (Chapel Hill, NC / Central Bucks West), as her shot deflected off of the crossbar and over the goal line. The Highlanders closed the half up 1-0 and when play resumed, it did not take long for the Cairn eleven to continue to build their lead. Junior midfielder
Em Kuansongtham (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School) hit the back net in the 59th minute for her first goal of the year and not long after, senior midfielder
Teresa Lee (Jackson, NJ / Calvary Academy) netted what would be the game-winning goal in the 61st minute, assisted by Marzinke, which positioned her now tied for second all-time in career assists in Cairn Women's Soccer program history at 15. Centenary (1-3-1) looked to answer back, scoring in the 67th minute to bring the score to 3-1. As time ran down, the Cyclones made things interesting, hitting in their second goal in the 89th, but the Highlander defense wouldn't let things progress any further, as the match closed 3-2 in favor of Cairn.
The Highlanders made the most of the shots they took, despite being out shot 21-8 (8-6 on goal). Marzinke tallied a goal and assist while Kuansongtham and Lee each had a goal, Lee on two shots while Kuansongtham found the net on her only shot of the day. Sophomore forward
Victoria Vega (Branchburg, NJ / Timothy Christian) and sophomore defender
Emilee Hess (Alburtis, PA / Salem Christian) had the only two other shots for Cairn. Sophomore goalkeeper
Emilee Doran (Langhorne, PA / Bucks County Community College) grabbed six saves in the complete game effort.
