Baseball: Highlanders Post Third-Straight Conference Series Sweep in Doubleheader Trouncing of Rosemont

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team swept their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader on the road at Rosemont College on Tuesday evening, completing the conference series sweep of the Ravens. The Highlanders dominated game one to the tune of a 20-2 victory, before shutting down the Rosemont offense in game two via an 11-0 shutout.

Cairn (18-17, 10-5 CSAC) threw up four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single by sophomore Tyler Harris (Oxford, PA / Oxford Area). The Highlanders plated five more runs over the next two frames before Rosemont (15-17, 7-8 CSAC) scored its first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Cairn, leading 12-1 in the top of the fifth, put the game out of reach when senior Tyler Fox (Boyertown, PA / West-Mont Christian Academy) launched a grand slam to increase the Cairn lead to 16-1.

Cairn pounded out 21 hits in game one, including four three-hit performances, led by Fox with three hits and four RBIs. Harris matched Fox with three hits and four RBIs, while sophomore Jared Sucro (Kamloops, BC / St. Ann's Academy) posted three hits and a pair of runs scored. Sophomore Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) rattled off a three-for-three day at the plate, scoring three runs and driving in two more, while senior Joe Greenwood (Wall, NJ / Calvary Academy) went two-for-two and scored a pair. Sophomore Joe Battaglia (Brielle, NJ / Brentwood Academy) collected his third-straight victory on the mound after hurling five innings, scattering seven hits, two runs and striking out five. Classmate Carlos Valenzuela (Tijuana, Mexico / Kentucky Country Day) closed out game one with two scoreless innings in relief.

Cairn jumped out in front early once again in game two, plating a pair of runs in both the first and third innings to take a 4-0 lead. The Highlanders blew the game wide open in the top of the fifth back-to-back RBI-knocks by Sucro and freshman Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) made the score 7-0. Cairn added three more runs in the inning, and did not allow a run for the duration of the contest.

Warr led the offense in game two with another three-for-three performance, running his season batting average to .488, the second-highest batting average among conference counterparts this season. Bauers and senior Jake Arnoldy (West Grove, PA / Wilmington Christian School) each added a hit and two RBIs. Senior Sam Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) was lights out on the bump, tossing his first career shutout and striking out a career-high nine Ravens in the process.

The Highlanders will be back on the field tomorrow when they return home for a non-conference affair with Centenary University (NJ) inside the Stillman Complex at 3:30 p.m.
