Baseball: Highlanders Drop CSAC Doubleheader to Keystone

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team dropped both games of their doubleheader at home against defending States Athletic Conference (CSAC) champion Keystone College on Saturday afternoon, falling 10-3 in game one before dropping a 7-2 decision in the nightcap.

In game one, Keystone (13-10, 6-0 CSAC) got on the board first via an RBI-single to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half, Cairn (7-15, 1-5 CSAC) reclaimed the lead at 3-1 off back-to-back RBI-knocks by sophomores Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) and Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy). The Giants regained the edge after plating three runs in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead. The game remained a one-run contest until the top of the sixth, when Keystone capitalized on a Highlander error with two outs to score six runs in the inning and take a 10-3 lead, a lead it held for the remainder of the contest.

Cairn was led offensively in game one by Warr with two hits, while Jackson added a base knock and two RBIs. Senior Sam Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) kept the Highlanders in the contest on the bump, going five strong, scattering four hits, four runs and striking out four. Graduate Student Ben Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) added 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, giving up no hits.

In game two, Keystone gained the early advantage after plating five runs over the first five innings of the contest. Cairn cut the deficit to three in the bottom of the fourth after Spadea hammered his second homer of the season over the fence in left field. The Giants answered with a solo shot of their own in the top of the sixth, and Cairn did not score another run for the duration of the game.

Spadea drove in the only two Cairn runs of the game via his two-run homer. Jackson got the start on the mound, contributing three innings of work, scattering five hits, five runs (three earned) and striking out three. Freshman Nick Benson (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) put forth three strong innings of relief for Cairn, allowing just one hit and one run.

The Highlanders will be back on the diamond tomorrow on Wednesday, April 12 when they travel to Trenton, New Jersey to take on non-conference foe Eastern University in a single, nine-inning contest under the lights at Trenton Thunder Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
