Baseball: Highlanders Take Down Eastern, Shine Under Bright Lights at Trenton Thunder Ballpark

TRENTON, N.J. – The Cairn University baseball team won, 12-7, in a non-conference contest against Eastern University at Trenton Thunder Ballpark (home field of MLB Draft League Affiliate, the Trenton Thunder) on Wednesday evening.

Cairn (8-15) jumped in front after plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by senior Sam Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury). Eastern (8-24) got two runs back in the third frame, and took its first lead of the contest after four more runners crossed home in the fourth inning (6-4). In the bottom of the sixth, the Highlanders tied the contest after a two-RBI base knock by senior Tyler Fox (Boyertown, PA / West-Mont Christian Academy), followed up by a go-ahead, RBI-single by freshman Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City). On the very next batter, Spadea made Eastern pay after drawing a 3-1 count with two men on base, sending the next pitch deep into the Trenton night sky in left-center field for a three-run homer to increase the Cairn lead to 10-6. The Highlanders added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning, before closing the door on the Eagles in the ninth.

Cairn was led offensively by Spadea who posted a pair of hits and a game-high five RBIs. Bauers and junior Jake Meisel (Newark, DE / Rosemont College) each added multi-hit games, and both scored three runs a-piece. Graduate Student Ben Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) got the win in relief for Cairn after hurling two scoreless innings. Freshman Nick Benson (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) and junior Eli Schooley (Horseheads, NY / Horseheads) each added a scoreless frame in relief, while sophomore Ronaldhino Alcin (Miami, FL / North Miami Beach) closed out the final inning for Cairn.

The Highlanders will be back on the diamond on Friday, April 14 when they return home to Langhorne to begin a pivotal Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) series with Saint Elizabeth University in a single, nine-inning game inside the Stillman Complex at 3:30 p.m.
