Baseball: Meisel’s Grand Slam Paces Cairn in Non-Conference Win at LBC

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team completed the home-and-home series sweep against non-conference foe Lancaster Bible College on Wednesday evening, topping the Chargers 10-4 in an eight-inning game due to darkness.

Cairn (15-17, 7-5 CSAC) jumped on top in the first inning off the bat of senior Sam Spadea's (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) eighth home run of the season to take a 2-0 lead. Lancaster Bible (13-23, 9-9 United East) answered with two runs in the bottom half, before junior Jake Meisel (Newark, DE / Rosemont College) launched his first homer of the season, a grand slam in the top of the second inning, to give Cairn a 6-2 lead. The Chargers cut the deficit to three (6-3) with a run in the third off of a solo-homer, but Cairn responded with a three-run fourth inning to take command of the contest. The game was deemed official after eight inning due to darkness and an earlier rain delay.

Cairn was led offensively by Meisel with two hits, three runs and a season-high four RBIs. Senior Tyler Fox (Boyertown, PA / West-Mont Christian Academy) and sophomore Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) each added a pair of knocks, while sophomore Tyler Warr's (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) two-hit day increased his hitting streak to 19 games. Spadea his third win of the season on the mound hurling two innings and striking out three. Graduate Student Bryan Stimpson (Monroeville, NJ / Cornell University) added three innings in relief, scattering two hits, one runs and striking out a season-high five hitters, while sophomore Joe Battaglia (Brielle, NJ / Brentwood Academy) tossed two innings of one-hit ball, striking out a pair.

The Highlanders will be back on the diamond later today when they open up a conference series at home inside the Stillman Complex in a single, nine-inning game against Rosemont College at 3 p.m.
