LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team claimed the first game of their three-game Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) series against Rosemont College at home on Thursday evening, besting the Ravens by a score of 10-1. In the win, freshman catcher
Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City) threw out his 20
th potential base stealer of the season, surpassing Head Coach
Brett Marks' five-year single-season runners caught stealing record.
Cairn (16-17, 8-5 CSAC) kicked off the game with a bang, when
Tyler Fox (Boyertown, PA / West-Mont Christian Academy) looped a fly ball into no man's land in left field. The left fielder leaped full extension and missed the ball, which rolled past him deeper into the outfield. Fox scampered all the way around the bases as Rosemont (15-15, 7-6 CSAC) tried to recover, but it was to no avail as Fox registered an inside the park home run to give Cairn a 1-0 lead.
The Highlanders added two more runs in the second inning, before Rosemont got on the board in the top of the third (3-1). Cairn increased the advantage to 5-1 with RBI-knocks by senior
Sam Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) and sophomore
Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy), before Bauers blew the game open with a two-RBI single in the fourth inning (7-1).
Fox, Bauers, Warr and sophomore
Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) each registered multi-hit efforts, and Fox added two runs and game-high four RBIs, while Warr increased his hitting streak to 20 games. Sophomore
Ronaldhino Alcin (Miami, FL / North Miami Beach) moved to 4-1 on the mound after hurling six innings of two-hit ball, giving up one run and striking out 10 Ravens. Freshman
Nick Benson (Philadelphia, PA / Father Judge) earned the save, tossing three innings of no-hit ball in relief, striking out five.
The Highlanders are scheduled tentatively for Saturday, April 29 to complete their conference series with Rosemont in a doubleheader at Heuser Park at 3 p.m.
