PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's volleyball team picked up their second-straight sweep, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-17) on the road at Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) adversary the University of Valley Forge on Wednesday evening.
Cairn (9-8, 2-1 CSAC) found themselves in a back-and-forth first set with Valley Forge (6-11, 2-5 CSAC), leading 22-18 near the end of the first frame. The Highlanders closed the set with three consecutive kills, capped off by one from freshman
Moses Gamble (Rocklin, CA / Rocklin) to take a 1-0 match lead. Cairn dominated set two, storming out to a 13-4 lead and never looked back, claiming a 25-13 second-set victory. After the Highlanders took a 19-13 lead in set three, UVF made a push to try to send the match to a fourth set, winning four-straight points to cut the deficit to two (19-17). However, Cairn extinguished the Patriot effort, rallying for five-straight points, including two kills by junior
Noah Ruiz Esparza (Levittown, PA / Tabor College) to finish off the sweep.
Cairn was led offensively by senior
Caleb Horning (Adamstown, PA / Cocalico), who posted a team-high nine kills with no errors for a perfect hitting percentage on the evening, as well as scooping up a team-high nine digs. Junior
Joe Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / Holden Christian Academy) followed with eight kills, while senior
Joshua Hoagland (Chiang Rai, Thailand / Chiang Rai International Christian School) added six kills to his name. Freshman
Josh Adler (Levittown, PA / Neshaminy) dished out a team-high 24 assists, followed by senior
Shea Scott (Harleysville, PA / Souderton) with 14 assists.
The Highlanders will now gear up for a highly-anticipated CSAC Championship rematch at home against Saint Elizabeth University on Saturday inside the Mason Activity Center at 1 p.m. Before the match, the Highlanders will honor their six senior for their contributions to the program over the years.
