Men’s Lacrosse: Unselfish Offense & Stout Defense Highlight Cairn’s 16-4 Victory over Centenary

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's lacrosse team dished out a program record 14 assists as they took down non-conference adversary Centenary University (NJ) by a score of 16-4 inside the Stillman Complex on Wednesday evening.
 
Cairn (2-4) poured on the offense early, scoring the first nine goals of the contest before Centenary (0-7) got on the board with their first goal late in the first half. The Highlanders held a commanding 10-1 lead at intermission. The Highlanders came out of the break with equal energy, scoring five more unanswered tallies and led 15-1 at the end of the third quarter. The Cyclones scored three of the final four tallies of the bout.
 
As mentioned, the Highlanders set a new program record for assists in a single game, assisting on 14 of their 16 goals in the contest. Cairn out shot Centenary, 48-26, and bested the Cyclones in ground balls (47-36).
 
Freshman Cole Heffler (Eldersburg, MD / Central Maryland Christian) led the Highlanders with a new single-game record nine points on three goals and an additional new program record with six assists. Junior Jonathan Balsamo (Long Island, NY / Eastport South Manor) led the scoring output with a team-high four goals and a pair of assists, while freshman Tyler Orozco (Edgemere, MD / FCA) added two goals and two assists. Sophomore Danny Turner (Cheltenham, PA / Cheltenham) rounded out Cairn's multi-goal scorers with a pair of tallies. Freshman Letoya Nyilinkindi (New York, NY / Grimsley) added a goal and three assists, and matched Heffler with a game-high seven ground balls. Cairn forced 29 Centenary turnovers on the day, led by the pair of sophomore Devin Murphy (Walden, NY / Valley Central) and freshman Nicholas Kennedy (Hudson Valley, NY / Goshen Central) with three caused turnovers each. Sophomore Nico Cione (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) earned his second win of the season, making eight saves between the pipes, while freshman Daniel Lafferty (Clifton, VA / Trinity Christian) finished out the final 23 minutes in the cage, corralling three saves in the process.
 
The Highlanders get back on the road on Saturday, March 25 when they travel to Doylestown for their final non-conference bout of the season when they take on Delaware Valley University at 1 p.m.
