Men’s Soccer: Highlanders’ Late Comeback Falls Short at Home vs. Longtime Rival, LBC

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's soccer team lost, 3-2, against longtime rival Lancaster Bible College at home inside the Stillman Athletic Complex on Monday evening.

Lancaster Bible (5-2-1) grabbed the early edge just over seven minutes into the contest on a through ball down the right-hand side to take an early 1-0 lead. Cairn (3-4-2) had a resounding answer just four minutes later, after sophomore Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) spun around his defender inside the box and found classmate Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township), who fired a left-footed rocket past the keeper to knot the contest up at one a-piece. The Chargers reclaimed the lead in the 18th minute, scoring off a rebound attempt to take a 2-1 lead, an advantage they took into intermission.

Both teams then settled into a defensive battle for the next 60 minutes, before LBC added an insurance goal in the 76th minute off a tick-tack-toe rally through the Highlander back line to take a 3-1 lead. The Highlanders made things interesting after earning a free kick opportunity in the 83rd minute, when Beers fired a shot off the keeper, where an awaiting fifth-year team captain Josh Goodyear (Camp Hill, PA / Camp Hill HS) buried the rebound attempt to cut the deficit to just one (3-2) with just under eight minutes remaining in regulation. The Highlanders kept up the offensive pressure in the waning minutes, and Goodyear found a golden opportunity with under a minute remaining, getting a good piece of a header off a cross from Brittain, but LBC net minder Isaac Barrow lept into the air to make an exceptional save near the top woodwork, and the Chargers held on for the victory in what capped off a highly entertaining contest between two respected rivals.

LBC held the advantage in total shots (23-15) and shots on goal (13-10). The Chargers seven corner kicks bested the Highlanders four opportunities in the contest. Beers paced the Highlanders offensive output with a goal and an assist, while sophomore goalkeeper Chris Eelman (North Haledon, NJ / Hawthorne Christian) corralled nine saves between the pipes in a complete game effort.

The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, September 28 when they welcome the Devils from FDU-Florham to Langhorne for a non-conference tilt inside the Stillman Complex at 3:30 p.m.
