LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team kept the ball rolling in the second homecoming event of the day with a 3-1 victory to kick off their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) schedule with a 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.
"Saint Elizabeth played deep and very defensive oriented. It was tough to score despite the shots we had." remarked Head Coach
Kailey Bartholomew.
"However, we made some in-game adjustments and were able to get a few key goals. Our players responded very well to the change change of pace today and adopted well to the tactics change. We are very happy to remain undefeated on our field and have a great homecoming win for all of our fans."
Cairn (5-3-1, 1-0-0 CSAC) notched the first tally of the bout in the 22
nd minute when junior
Teresa Lee (Jackson, NJ / Calvary Academy) found some space off of a throw in and distributed the ball to classmate
Grace Miller (Chapel Hill, NC / Central Bucks West), who fired a left-footed shot over the keeper's arms for her first goal of the season to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Cairn increased its lead to 2-0 right before halftime when senior
Rachel Yoder (Telford, PA / Souderton) placed a through ball into the pocket of junior
Becca Marzinke (Quakertown, PA / Upper Bucks Christian), who headed the ball into the net to give Cairn a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.
The Highlanders added an insurance goal late in the contest when Marzinke left the ball for senior
Emily Minard (Columbus, NJ / Life Center Academy) who launched a shot upper-90 past the keeper in the 88
th minute to boost the advantage to 3-0.
Saint Elizabeth (2-5, 0-1-0 CSAC) earned a late tally off a run in the 89
th minute to spoil the shutout possibility.
Marzinke led the Highlander offense with a goal and an assist on the day, followed by Miller and Minard with a goal a-piece. Sophomore
Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian) got the start in between the pipes, allowing no goals over 71 minutes, while sophomore
Jianna Fjording (Copenhagen, Denmark / International Community School) finished out the last 19 minutes in net.
The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, September 28 when they continue their conference slate with a home bout with conference counterpart Bryn Athyn College inside the Stillman Complex at 7 p.m.
