Men’s Soccer: Skaer’s First Half Tally Not Enough as Salisbury Sneaks Past Highlanders on Homecoming

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's soccer team lost, 2-1, in the final contest of Cairn's 2022 Homecoming slate to non-conference adversary Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon.

Cairn (3-3-2) wasted little time putting the pressure on Salisbury's (1-5-2) back line, earning a corner kick opportunity in the 17th minute. Sophomore Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township) took the corner and deposited a gorgeous ball to an awaiting fifth-year Tyler Skaer (Brookhaven, PA / Penn State Brandywine), who skied over his defender and headed the ball into the back of the net to put Cairn on top, 1-0. The Highlanders took that 1-0 lead into intermission.

The Sea Gulls knotted the contest up at one a-piece after scoring an own goal in the 54th minute, courtesy of a cross that deflected off a Highlander defender and past sophomore goalkeeper Chris Eelman (North Haledon, NJ / Hawthorne Christian). Salisbury delivered the fatal blow in the 82nd minute, after a handball inside the box gave them a penalty kick chance that hey converted on to make the score 2-1. Cairn got one final quality chance in the waning seconds of the contest, when fifth-year team captain Josh Goodyear (Camp Hill, PA / Camp Hill HS) got a good piece of a header inside the box, but the Salisbury keeper turned it aside to seal the victory for the Sea Gulls.

Both teams battled to an even mark in shots (13-13), while Cairn held the advantage in shots on goal (10-7). Salisbury earned 10 corner kicks compared to Cairn's nine in the bout. Eelman posted another complete game effort between the pipes, collecting six saves.

The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Monday, September 26 when they take the field in Langhorne for a rescheduled contest with non-conference foe Lancaster Bible College inside the Stillman Complex at 7 p.m.
