LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team battled to a scoreless 0-0 draw at home against non-conference opponent Gwynedd Mercy University inside the Stillman Complex on Wednesday evening.
Cairn (4-3-1) pressed the tempo early, firing two shots on net within the 15 minutes of the contest. Gwynedd Mercy's (2-3-3) back line held firm, not allowing any goal in the first half despite nine Cairn shots throughout the first 45 minutes and both teams went into intermission tied at 0-0. The Griffins edged the Highlanders in shots in the second half (7-5), but neither team managed to break through en-route to the scoreless draw (no regular season overtime in 2022 due to change in NCAA regulation rules). Gwynedd got the best opportunity of the half when it received a penalty kick chance in the 42
nd minute, but fired the shot high to keep the game tied.
Cairn held the advantage in shots (14-10) and shots on goal (10-5). The Highlanders also bested the Griffins in corner kick opportunities (6-2). Junior
Teresa Lee (Jackson, NJ / Calvary Academy) led the Highlander offense with a team-high five shots, including three on net. Sophomore goalkeeper
Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian) continued her dominant start to the 2022 campaign, corralling five saves while holding the Griffins without a tally.
The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Saturday, September 24 when they compete in the second event of Cairn's homecoming slate, as they open up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play at home against Saint Elizabeth University at 1 p.m.
