LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's soccer team won, 2-1, at home over non-conference opponent Elizabethtown College on Saturday evening, marking their first victory inside the G. Patrick Stillman Athletic Complex.
"I couldn't be prouder of the way we competed tonight." remarked Head Coach
Luke Gibson.
"Our energy on the field and bench was contagious, and it played a huge part in getting a tough win against a very good program."
Cairn (2-2-2) wasted no time putting the pressure on Elizabethtown (2-3-1), as sophomore
Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Township) delivered a perfect, left-footed cross into the breadbasket of classmate
Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) in the 10
th minute to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. The Highlander back line remained firm throughout the first half, keeping the Blue Jays off the scoreboard and deterring E-Town's quick-moving offensive scheme away from sophomore goalkeeper
Chris Eelman (North Haledon, NJ / Hawthorne Christian), as Cairn took its 1-0 lead into intermission.
E-Town's dynamic offense broke through in the 75
th minute, burying a rebound attempt into the back of the net to knot the contest up at one a-piece. Cairn immediately responded one minute later, when junior
Joshua Smith (Attleboro, MA / Homeschooled) executed a cross into the box to Beers, who battled for control of the ball and snuck a shot past the E-Town keeper to re-take the lead. The Blue Jays fired two more shots on net during the last 14 minutes, but Eelman corralled both shots to seal a well-earned victory for the Highlanders.
Elizabethtown outshot the Highlanders in the contest (22-5) and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Beers paced the Highlander offense on the day with one goal and one assist. Eelman snagged nine saves between the pipes to earn the complete game victory.
The Highlanders will be back on the pitch on Tuesday, September 20 when the continue their home stand as they welcome Cabrini University to Langhorne for a non-conference tilt inside the Stillman Complex at 7 p.m.
