Women’s Soccer: Offensive Outburst Propels Highlanders Past Penn State Schuylkill

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University women's soccer team shutout the Nittany Lions of Penn State Schuylkill at home by a score of 8-0 on Tuesday evening.

"Once again, we are very proud of the girls." remarked Head Coach Kailey Bartholomew. "They responded to their competition well. We left the field with a plethora of goals and remain undefeated on our new turf. We made a lot of substitutions and changes, yet the level of play remained high. We as a coaching staff love to see the continuous improvement game after game and it's great to see our team really click."

It was an all-around victorious effort for Cairn (3-2) as the scoring started early from back-to-back goals from junior forward Em Kuansongtham (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School) in the 13th and 16th minutes, assisted by junior defender Grace Miller (Chapel Hill, NC / Central Bucks West) and junior midfielder Teresa Lee (Jackson, NJ / Calvary Academy), respectively, to set the pace early at 2-0. The lead was stretched to 3-0 only less than two minutes later when Lee netted a goal of her own, assisted by sophomore forward Julia Wright (Harrisonville, PA / Shalom Christian Academy). Freshman midfielder Rachel Ingersol (West Chester, PA / Bayard Rustin) scored her first career goal, assisted by junior midfielder Becca Marzinke (Quakertown, PA / Upper Bucks Christian) in the 25th minute and Lee closed out the half netting her second goal of the match in the 36th minute, assisted as well by Marzinke.

Penn State Schuylkill (1-2) could not stop the Highlander offense in the second half as senior midfielder Kayla Koch (Sellersville, PA / Faith Christian Academy) found the back of the net, assisted by junior forward Ashanley Philippe (Santiago, Dominical Republic / Santiago Christian School), to put the Highlanders up 6-0 in the 47th minute. Kuansongtham and Lee rounded out their hat tricks in the 49th and 52nd minute, assisting each other, to close the commanding victory for the Highlanders by a score of 8-0. Lee and Kuansongtham led the Highlanders in scoring with three goals each. Lee added two assists on the day and Kuansongtham tallied one. Koch and Ingersol rounded out the scoring column with a goal apiece. The Highlander defense held the Nittany Lions without a single shot in 80 minutes of play. Sophomore goalkeeper Jianna Fjording (Copenhagen, Denmark / International Community School) picked up the only save on the day, her first career, in 19 minutes of work.

The Highlanders return to action Saturday afternoon on the road against Centenary University (NJ) in Hackettstown as they look to keep the offense firing on all cylinders. Kickoff is set for 2:30 pm.
