Baseball: Highlanders Sweep Ravens, Increase Program-Record Win Streak to 13 Games

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team swept their non-conference doubleheader at home against Rosemont College inside the Stillman Complex on Senior Day Monday, winning game one by a score of 14-7 before claiming a 1-0 blanking of the Ravens in game two. With the pair of wins, the Highlanders increased their program-record win streak to 13 games, the third-longest active winning streak in all of NCAA Division III baseball.

In game one, Rosemont (4-26, 1-8 CSAC) gained the early advantage thanks to four runs in the bottom of  the first inning (the Ravens were the home team for both contests) of the first to take a 4-0 lead and held a 5-1 advantage after two innings. Cairn (25-11, 8-4 CSAC) trimmed the deficit to just 6-4 after four innings and notched its first lead of the contest after a three-run fifth frame, highlighted by a two-RBI single by junior Brooks Price (Nashville, TN / Franklin Road Academy). After the Ravens knotted the game up at seven a-piece in the fifth inning, Cairn exploded for seven runs over the final two innings of the bout to put away the Ravens. The Highlanders were led offensively in game one by junior Samuel Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) and freshman Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) who each posted a game-high three hits to go along with three RBIs. Price followed with two hits and three RBIs, while freshman Jared Sucro (Kamloops, British Columbia / St. Ann's Academy) posted two hits, three runs and swiped a career-high five stolen bases, tying the program record for stolen bases in a single game. Senior Dom Maglione (Hamilton, NJ / Steinert) improved to 5-0 on the season after tossing four innings in relief, giving up just one run and striking out a pair.

In game two, the bats quieted as both teams engaged in a defensive stalemate for most of the contest, resulting in only five total hits between the two teams. However, Cairn got the advantage it needed in the top of the second inning when junior Jake Arnoldy (West Grove, PA / Wilmington Christian School) delivered a sacrifice fly to score Spadea who singled to lead off the inning. That one run was all the Highlanders needed as sophomore Connor Ferguson (Laguna Niguel, CA / Capistrano Valley Christian School) shut down the Ravens bats throughout the duration of the contest. Ferguson turned in arguably the best outing of his career, tossing his first complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out seven without allowing a single Rosemont hitter to get into scoring position in the bout.

Cairn will be back on the diamond on Wednesday, April 27 when it hits the road for the first time in over two weeks when it travels to Scranton to take on Marywood University in a single non-conference bout at 3:30 p.m.
