SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cairn University baseball team saw their program-record 13-game winning streak come to an end at non-conference opponent Marywood University on Wednesday, falling to the Pacers 7-6 in walk-off fashion.
Cairn (25-12) struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Marywood (19-13) had the answer to the tune of five consecutive runs to take a 5-2 lead which lasted through six innings. The Highlanders cut the deficit to 5-3 when senior
Joshua Melchior (Boyertown, PA / Valley Forge Baptist Academy) scored on a double steal attempt when a throw down went awry. The Pacers commanded a 6-3 mark heading into the top of the ninth, when an RBI-double by graduate student
Brian Amantia Jr. (Columbus, NJ / King's Christian) cut the deficit to just two (6-4). Junior
Samuel Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) stepped up in the next at bat and delivered a crushing blow in the form of a two-RBI double to tie the game at six a-piece to send the game to the bottom half. However, the Pacers walked-off in the bottom half of the ninth, when a ball in the hole between second and first base allowed a run to score from scoring position to win the game.
Spadea led the Highlanders with a pair of hits and a game-high three RBIs, while freshman
Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) matched him with two hits. Melchior scored a game-high three runs and swiped a game-high three stolen bases. Freshman
