LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Cairn University men's volleyball team won, 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-17) against Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe Saint Elizabeth University at home on Wednesday evening, marking their fourth-straight win and handing the Eagles their first conference loss of the season.
Saint Elizabeth (8-2, 5-1 CSAC) the former No. 1 team in the CSAC standings, showed its prowess early, claiming a 25-20 victory in set one to take a 1-0 match lead. The Eagles looked to seize control, leading 21-19 near the end of the second set. However, Cairn (5-4, 3-0 CSAC) answered with a four-point swing, capped off by two service aces by senior
Dave Cassel (Silverdale, PA / Pennridge) to put the Highlanders within striking distance. Cairn finished off the set with a kill by junior
Caleb Horning (Adamstown, PA / Cocalico) to knot the match up at 1-1. In set three, both teams battled to a 21-21 tie, before the Highlanders scored the final four points of the frame to take a 2-1 match lead. Cairn closed out the match with a dominating fourth set, as sophomore
Joe Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School) hammered home the final four kills of the match to give the Highlanders solo possession of first place in the CSAC standings.
Cairn was led offensively by sophomore
Will Nase (Harleysville, PA / Souderton) who slammed down a match-high 15 kills, while Poirier followed with a career-high 12 kills to the tune of a .450 hitting percentage. Junior
Joshua Hoagland (Chiang Rai, Thailand / Chiang Rai International Christian School) and Horning added eight kills and Hoagland tied a career-high with five blocks at the net. Junior
Shea Scott (Harleysville, PA / Souderton) dished out a match-and career high 41 assists to go along with 10 digs, while junior
Josh Moyer (Quakertown, PA / Quakertown Community) led the defensive effort with a team-high 12 digs.
Cairn will be back in action on Friday, March 18 when it hits the road for the first time in over a month, traveling to Rosemont College for a conference bout at 7 p.m.
