HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Cairn University baseball team won, 13-3, over non-conference foe Centenary University (NJ) on the road on Wednesday, marking their sixth-straight triumph.
Cairn (7-3) jumped on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first and took that lead into the third inning before exploding for three runs to take a 4-0 lead. Centenary (3-6) scored the next three runs of the contest to make it 5-3 in the fifth inning, but the Highlanders quickly responded by plating three runners in the sixth frame to make it 8-3. Cairn put the contest out of reach with a massive five-run eighth inning and did not allow a Cyclone to cross home for the rest of the contest. Cairn made just one error in the contest compared to four Cyclone miscues.
The Highlanders were paced on the mound by junior
Cameron Culver (Croydon, PA / Truman) who dazzled on the bump over nine innings, throwing his first career complete game, giving up six hits, no earned runs and striking out six to earn his second win of the season and the first complete game thrown by a Highlander this season. At the plate, senior
Joshua Melchior (Boyertown, PA / Valley Forge Baptist Academy) led the charge with a pair of hits and a game-high three runs scored, while junior
Samuel Spadea (Yardley, PA / Pennsbury) matched Melchior with a pair of base knocks and a game-and season high three RBIs.
Cairn will be back in action on Thursday, March 17 when it hits the road again for a non-conference bout with Eastern University at 3 p.m.
